Hi Everyone
I think that you will have had to reach middle age to have heard of this Hollywood actress Mae West who was a star when films were only made in black and white. I have not heard of her of course as I am only approaching middle age. One of her famous quotes was "You only live once but if you do it right, once is enough". I was reminded of this when I read this week that Silvio Berlusconi had died. He was a larger than life, flamboyant, and dodgy former Prime Minister of Italy. Many would say that he was a mentor for Boris and Donald to follow in his footsteps. No matter where we come from and whatever we choose to do with our lives, there is only one ending. I have been a member of the Rotary movement for almost 44 years. A friend says that the only reason he is a member is to do some good in the world. He might not have wealth and certainly has no influence, and what he is able to achieve with the help of others may be very modest but surely he is worth ten of others. Silvio, Boris, and Donald will probably be judged by history in a negative way but millions of us may ultimately be gone and almost forgotten, but at least I like to think that we were here for the right reasons, and as Mae said "If you do it right, once is enough".
Every so often a wonderful piece of useless information comes along. Apparently, we eat as many baked beans here in the UK as in the rest of the world combined. All our haricot beans are imported from the US, Canada, Ethiopia and yes you have guessed it - China. Now however there is a 'wind' of change if you know what I mean as scientists have developed a seed that can be grown here in our climate. You should know however that until now you have been living with a serious piece of misinformation that reading this Rubbish will now put right. The beans on your toast or breakfast have been steamed not baked so it will not be long before you will see tins of British steamed beans on our supermarket shelves, at probably twice the price of course. Somehow that seems a 'wind' of change too far.
One of the modern ways of living is the open plan house where the living space and the Kitchen area are all one space. Now, since we completed rebuilding our stable block into our present home almost fifteen years ago, that is the way we live. Now that is fine when the Main Contractor is in the Kitchen and I am minding my own business in the living area but after nearly fifteen years of harmonious living, the tables have been turned as the Main Contractor has been quite poorly this week with a kidney infection, so I have been converted into the happy housewife. Now my favourite chair faces away from the Kitchen so I cannot usually see what is going on there, and I would never dare to interfere anyway, but if the Main Contractor sits in her favourite chair she only has to direct her eyes to the left to see directly into the Kitchen. I am sure that you will now have realised why this has been a problem for me as I struggle with my cooking, but I have however managed to get a few stripes on my arm for my efforts. Thankfully after a week of antibiotic magic, the Main Contractor will put me back into retirement with my stripes likely to disappear fairly soon, but just in case the situation happens again, I am looking for a large curtain to hang between the Kitchen and the Living area, preferably a blackout curtain with sound proofing properties. Any offers?
Just a Thought:
The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you often succeed.
I tried making Doughnuts but in the end, I got tired of the hole thing.
I tried a cheese dish and made some grate things.
