Upside Down News

Hi Everyone

As a young teenager, Monday night was the night that I went with my pal Ken to the cinema, or "the Pictures" as it was known at that time. Although the local Broadway cinema had almost 1500 seats it was important to be there by 6-15pm to avoid having to stand at the back or queue outside. There was the main film, a supporting B film, maybe a cartoon or serial, and the Movietone News. As young kids who were more interested in reading the Rover comic than the daily newspaper, the Movietone news in sparkling black and white was our window on the world. Being just after the end of WW2 much of the 10 minute news was about how the world was adapting to life after a horrific six year world war. Obviously, Hitler and Winston Churchill were featured in nearly all the news. I could understand why Hitler was a hated villain but I could never understand why some in the audience booed when Churchill appeared. I had obviously missed something but as an innocent young teenager with much more important things to occupy my mind, news came low on the agenda. Sadly now news seems to dominate our lives every day. On one night this week on BBC tv there was a programme about the state of many rented homes in this country and the unscrupulous who own them followed by a programme about how easy it is to scam people out of their life savings followed by a serial about the troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1980s. After that three hours of 'pleasure', I long for the day when I can bring myself to switch off all the news. They say that we start as children and that those of us who finally reach middle age, we become children again. Bring it on!.

This week I had a haircut. I do feel that I get good value for money, unlike some people I know where the hairdresser does a two minute trim on the sides and back and a polish on top. The most important news my hairdresser had got this week was that she had cooked a pineapple upside down pudding for her family. She was obviously very pleased with the outcome and wanted to share it with anyone who would listen and as I was trapped in her chair, I did not have much choice. It did, however, remind me that when my lovely mother in law lived in a flat near to us, she would come to us for her Sunday lunch armed with a tray full of homemade puddings for the week. On a fairly regular basis, she would come with an upside down pudding. The problem was it was not intended to be upside down. She would layer the pastry in a deep tray before filling it with the egg custard mixture, When it came out of the oven the pastry would be on top while the egg custard had sunk to the bottom. As she had never taken physics at school she never quite understood how it happened but as I said to her "Keep trying Ma, one of these weeks you will get it right". By saying that it guaranteed that we would get a tray full of delicious homemade puddings every week.

Next week we have Donald in court, how exciting is that? He is apparently faced with the most difficult thing he has ever been asked to do in his life when he swears that he will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. It is speculated that his court appearance might actually enhance his chances of becoming the next President of the US. Will it turn out to be another major event in world history or just a Stormy in a teacup?

Just a Thought:

"Evils can be created much quicker than they can be cured". Winston Churchill

My friend made an upside down cake this week. It was a Victoria sponge but she fell over the dog.

Secretary: Hurricane Florence is causing trouble.

Donald: Offer her the same deal as Stormy Daniels.
