Sandwiches To Go

Hi Everyone

Now if, like me you are approaching middle age you will remember that your mother cut slices of bread from a newly baked loaf, very often still warm from the nearby bakery. The thickness of the slice of bread depended on the mother of course and I can report that in my case the slices were very thin as you would expect from someone who was tight with money. After buttering the bread, jam, lemon curd, Shippams fish or meat paste, corned beef and best of all beef dripping with the brown jelly from the bottom were added. If you were very lucky or if it was Sunday you might get a ham or tongue filling. As well as being a staple tea time meal, nearly every one took a Tupperware box or something similar, full of sandwiches to work as it was almost impossible to buy a sandwich and, in those times nearly everything was made at home.. I am reminding you of all this Rubbish as this week I read that the UKs leading sandwich maker has total sales of £1.8billion with profits in the range of £95million to £97million and that is just one of the country's sandwich makers. Now thankfully I have not inherited the Senior Partners' frugal habits but when people say that they are having difficulties with their finances, it is perhaps worth reminding them that a Tupperware box or something similar, two slices of bread with a variety of fillings would save them a considerable amount of money in a year. It would of course require a bit of effort and discipline to achieve the required reward but unfortunately, convenience seems to be a more attractive proposition with many today. I bet if the Senior Partner was around today, the country's leading sandwich maker would have serious competition.

All of us as children have hair, but as we go through life some of us keep our hair and some of us lose our hair. At least two of my Rubbish readers are bald, but sorry, a high court judge has said that I cannot call my friend bald without risking being taken to court accused of harassment. Apparently, a worker took his boss to court after being insulted about his baldness. I was disappointed not to receive my £1million compensation from the Avanti rail company so I thought that there may be a possibility at the High Court. The problem, however, is that I have still got a full head of hair but then I realised that over the years my hair had gone from brown to grey, so I thought that surely someone in my life must be responsible for that happening but when I realised that the Main Contractor might think she was responsible, I stepped back from the brink. Anyway, there did not seem to be much point in suing the Main Contractor for £1million as I would probably leave the court with the same £35 I got from Avanti followed by a lifetime of washing my own underpants.

A leading anti-poverty charity estimates that there are now 9.3 million people living in the UK who are facing hunger and hardship and are living below the poverty line of which 3 million are children. In a very small way, I am involved with a voluntary group about 300yards from the Fruit, Vegetable........... shop where I was born in what is now recorded as a deprived area. It is sad to see that thriving area of small businesses now replaced with shuttered windows, charity shops and food takeaways but it is also encouraging to see a small group of dedicated volunteers doing great work to bring help and relief to people in genuine need.

Just a Thought :

I would tell you a joke about some jam on a piece of bread, but you would only spread it.

Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
