Hi Everyone
This week has been quite an eventful week. Well, not that eventful really but for those of us approaching middle age, any event out of the normal makes it an exciting week. This week I ticked off another birthday but you will be relieved to know that I still cannot accept that I have reached middle age even though my family and friends know that the only useful things to buy me as a present are either food or drink. Even better is the food kit where you get most of the ingredients to enable you to stretch your cooking skills beyond the usual beans or cheese on toast. Now I have two more Indian meals to prepare and that is before I have to cook our Christmas family meal!!!. The Main contractor has just choked, not on my Indian meal but on the idea that I will be allowed anywhere near the Kitchen on Christmas Day.
Now, this was the week that Christmas started at the Fruit, Vegetable, Flower, Game, and Lolly shop not sometime back in September. The chickens, turkeys, and pheasants were hanging outside the front of the shop on hooks in their feathers, of course, all the Christmas orders were in and the Partners worked until late into the evening so the errand boy (me) could deliver the Christmas goodies on the very heavy delivery bike. The goodies did not include any frozen food as hardly anyone had a fridge or freezer. All the vegetables were seasonal so you got spouts whether you like them or not. Exotic was not on the menu as all the food was basic with no pigs in blankets if you can call that exotic. Everything was fresh and had to be sold. You would have thought that the Senior Partner would have been supremely happy when the money was counted on Christmas Eve but the downside was that the week after Christmas the takings were well down as customers were still eating the leftovers from Christmas. Oh well, maybe something made her smile at Christmas. Now I look at the mountains of Christmas decorations in shops and garden centres that have taken many hours to put out on display only for at least half of it to be packed away until next Christmas. It all looks wonderful but is it any better than the simple Christmas we enjoyed all those years ago?
You will notice that I have not mentioned the energy crisis, strikes, freezing weather, or anything or anybody else who might spoil the festive season. That is because we are very busy watching Christmas films. As well as the old favourites there now seems to be a long list of new films, most of which were probably made in August with the actors sweating rather than freezing. They are all very predictable, and cheesy, with iffy acting. You can guess the ending within the first five minutes and, if you manage to stay awake, you will actually see the end. The point is that every film has a happy ending and that is something we all need this Christmas and in the months ahead.
Just a Thought:
Who is a Christmas tree's favourite singer? Spruce Springsteen
Why did the Christmas concert get canceled? Someone ate the drumsticks.
Have a great Christmas, it does not get more eventful for us.
Brian
